The First Vice President of the Gambia Football Association who also doubled as the Army Chief of Defense Staff Major-General Lang Tombong has been elected as the President of the Gambia National Olympic (GNOC) to replace Alhagie Abou Dandeh Njie whose term ends in June.

This comes after his rival and current Secretary General of the (GNOC) Alhagie Abdoulie Touray decided to back out of the race in favour of the Army Chief.

Fourteen out of the twenty-three affiliated associations of the National Olympic Committee had earlier on nominated the first Vice President of the Gambia Football Association for the top job of the country’s most powerful sporting body.

But a day before the deadline day for submission of candidacy, Abdoulie Touray also known as Baks decided to notify the (GNOC) for his withdrawal in the race.

Below read his letter sent to (GNOC) on Tuesday.

“I have decided to withdraw my candidature as President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee in support of the nomination of the Vice President of the Gambia Football Association, [Major] General Lang Tombong Tamba.

“I believe that he possesses the leadership qualities and a strong passion for sports and youth development to consolidate and build on the successes of the GNOC in the years to come.

“I will continue to work with him selflessly and faithfully in the development and promotion of sports in The Gambia in fulfillment of the Vision 2020 development objective of our dear motherland” the statement concludes.
