The Western Region third division play-off between Lamin United and Gunjur United was played at the Brikama Box Bar Mini Stadium on Wednesday.

And it took a stoppage time magic from Kebba Faye to win the game for Lamin.

The fixture between the two Western Region footballing giants was criticized by many after the region’s sports governing body decided this year to handpick the two teams for the local playoffs instead of the traditional qualifiers between the region’s clubs.

Wednesday’s game, though, lived up to all expectations with both Lamin and Gunjur exhibiting the kind of football that must have pushed the organizers to selecting them for the playoff.

But despite the beautiful football shown by both sides, neither were able to register a goal as they went into the break.

The second period saw more attacks from the southerners (Gunjur) whilst the northerners decided to sit back and depend on counter attacks, a strategy that finally paid off.

Two minutes into added time Kebba Faye collected the ball from his own half and went on a solo charge at the opponents skipping past all challenges on the way before unleashing a canon shot into the Gunjur net for the winner.

The result means Lamin United have now qualified for the qualifiers proper of the GFA third division league.
