Bun Njie gets top sports job

Barely two weeks after the appointment of Besenty Gomez as the new executive secretary of the N S C, another major change has been effected at the council.

There is another change at the government’s satellite arm responsible for the funding and monitoring of sports in the country that is according to Observer Sports Editor Nanama Keita.

Mr Sulayman Bun Njie, a seasoned educationist who also has undisputable passion for sports, has been named as the new chairman of the council replacing Mr Mustapha Alex Dacosta, whose term as interim chairman elapsed recently.

Mr Njie, a former principal at Muslim Senior Secondary School, confirmed his appointment to Observer Sports, hinting that he will need the support of all stakeholders in executing his duties for the attainment of excellence in sports in the country. "I accepted my appointment as the chairman of the National Sports Council last week and I was very much excited about it," said Mr Njie.

"It’s a task somebody has to pick up and I hope with my little experience coupled with the support from others we would do our quota in the attainment of excellence in sports." Meanwhile, Elizabeth Bahoum, director of National Records Service, Sheikh Tijan Faye, a veteran athlete and Ms Cecilia Jallow, have all been nominated to serve as council members. It could be recalled that a renowned Gambian sports enthusiast in Besenty Gomez was on January 11, appointed as the new executive secretary of the Council replacing Mr Alieu Cham whose contract was terminated.

Many sports enthusiasts whose opinions were sounded on the new developments at the council expressed their trust and confidence in the new team, describing them as a team that comprised of competent individuals who can work to bring about rapid sports development in the country.
