Real wins league title

Real de Banjul have won the GFA First Division League for the first time in five years following an impressive 3-1 win over Young Africans in the final game of the season played at the KG5 Mini-Stadium on Sunday.

The city boys came into the game needing only a win and were at their best on the night, dominating play from start to finish and scoring three successive goals before their opponents pulled one back in the closing minutes of the game.

With their nearest challengers Gambia Armed Forces taking a quick two-goal lead at the Independence Stadium, Real knew they had their work cut out, with Bubacarr Jallow alias Meles firing in a neat finish for the opener. Real continued dominating in the second half.

GFA League Round-up

On Saturday at the KG 5 mini stadium in Banjul, Real de Banjul defeated relegation hunting Serrekunda United 3-1 thanks to a brace from Modou Njie Sarr and Buba Jallow alias Meles.

Real de Banjul dominated the entire game and controlled the pace of the game. They weren’t made to wait long as it took them only 22 minutes for striker Modou Njie-Sarr to break the deadlock and give them lead after a fine cross from Meles.

Njie-Sarr added the double six minutes later scoring a simple tap after Ousman Jallow’s cross wasn’t able to be cleared away by the Serrekunda United defence. In the 34th minute, Serrekunda United’s Lamin Demba alias Master’s brilliant shot was punched away for a corner by goalkeeper Assan Jallow.

It didn’t take long for Assan to make another save as Lamin Jassey’s out-of-18 shot was again punched away by the Real shot-stopper. In the 45th minute, Real’s Alagie Bah tried a similar effort at the other end but could just watch as Modou Lamin Bittaye made a brilliant save by punching the ball away for a corner.

GFA League enters Week 19

On Friday evening at the KG 5 mini stadium in Banjul, Steve Biko played out a 1-1 draw against Young Africans in an intriguing encounter.

Steve Biko controlled the game clock in the entire half and created some openings but weren’t able to capitalize on any in the opening minutes.

It was not until in the 33rd minute that Biko created that first real chance at goal when Nfansu Bojang made a solo run into Young Africans’ goal area and all he had to do was to tap the ball into the far right corner to give his side the lead.

Young Africans’ Yusupha Sarr had the chance to level the scores before heading into the break but he lost concentration and put the ball wide past Musa Touray’s goal.

GFA league enters week 17

In week 17 of the GFA league, Real de Banjul beat Bakau outfit Steve Biko 2-1 thanks to a brace from goal poacher Modou Njie Sarr who is fast approaching former national team player Bai Omar Samba’s record for the number of goals scored in a league season.

The Real de Banjul striker has eleven goals to his name to Bai Omar Samba’s thirteen. Modou Njie Sarr broke the deadlock in the 28th minute after a Buba Jallow through pass and he wasted no time in slotting the ball in virtually an empty net.

But their lead lasted for only 17 minutes as an error by Real de Banjul’s goaltender Assan Jallow allowed Steve Biko’s Lamin Touray to collect the ball and all he had to do is to send in a very powerful volley to level the scores heading into the break.

In week 12 of the GFA league, Serrekunda United were able to hold the league leaders GPA to a 0-0 stalemate at the Banjul mini stadium.

An end-to-end starts to the match saw GPA nearly storm into the lead after only three minutes. A scramble inside the penalty area saw the ball drop to Cherno Njie in space, but with the goal at his mercy, he could not find the target as his volley flew over the bar.

The early shock did not put off Serrekunda United who slowly began to cause problems at the other end of the pitch. With 10 minutes gone, Lamin Jassey’s low drive was fumbled by Christoper Allen, who was fortunate to see Alfusainey Jaiteh scoop the rebound the wrong side of the post. Read more...
