Gamtel bows out of Confederation Cup

2011 Gambian FA Cup champions Gamtel FC on Monday were booted out of the 2012 CAF Confederation Cup first round of qualifiers after a 3-1 defeat in Mali by Réal de Bamako.

The Malian team qualified on a 3-2 aggregate. Dodou Susso, who scored the last gasp winner in Gambia two weeks ago, scored an own goal in the 18th minute that gave Réal de Bamako the lead.

Réal de Bamako’s Bouréma Coulibaly made it 2-0 in the 57th minute in what the Gamtel officials say it’s a bad officiating from the referee. Moustapha Kondé put the icing on the cake six minutes later.

Gamtel had an appeal for a penalty minutes later but it was overlooked by the referee. Ali Sowe scored the consolation for Gamtel in the 72nd minute.

It could be recalled that Gamtel won the first leg tie 1-0 courtesy of Dodou Susso but with the 3-1 scoreline, the Telecom boys waved goodbye to the Confederation Cup after a 3-2 aggregate win by Réal de Bamako.

Réal de Bamako face Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in the second round of qualifiers on 27-29 April.
