Sawaneh leaves it late to give Mons the win

Gambia international Ibou Sawaneh’s strike five minutes before the break was enough to give his Belgian side RAEC Mons the much needed three points under new head coach Enzo Scifo.

Ibou Sawaneh’s teammate and fellow countryman Mustapha “Toubabo” Jarju was only good for the bench against KVC Westerlo. The visitors opened the scoring as early as in the fifth minute of play through Brazilian midfielder Reynaldo dos Santos Silva after being assisted by Bart Goor.

After the goal, the visiting team created few goal scoring opportunities and never threatened Mons with the home team completely overseeing proceedings inside the field of play.

The home side leveled the scores through French striker Jérémy Perbet in the 38th minute after receiving a fine cross from his country man Jérémy Sapina. Sapina was involved in Mons’ second attack as he assisted Ibou Sawaneh two minutes later and the Gambian wasted no time in putting the icing on the cake thereby scoring his sixth league goal of the season.

The win lifts them up to 10th in the 16-team-table with 36 points and host Koninklijke Beerschot Antwerpen Club next at the Stade Charles Tondreau for a spot into the Europa League Play-off.
